Cultivating a Slow Life on a Few Acres

Welcome to the Barefoot Homestead! We’re the Combs family, living life in coastal Virginia with a lot of intention and a dose of nostalgia.

As a culinary student, Bob titled his culminating project “From Cultivation to Preparation,” a term now known colloquially as “farm to table” and one that we embrace wholeheartedly. As a college student, Holly took off across the country in a pickup truck with horse in tow to study Equine Journalism. These were just the beginnings of our adventures.

Today, we live on 2.5 acres of land, with a large garden and a small menagerie. In an effort to “do life” better, we are focused on cultivating our little homestead into a place of respite and hard work, a place of hospitality and solitude, a place to adventure out from and return home to. We believe in community, in good food, in simplicity, in fresh air, and in the One who created it all.

We hope you enjoy our adventures, musings, photos, and recipes!

The Barefoot Homestead family

Barefoot Farmer: Bob is a chef by training with a career in food sales. On his own time, he cultivates a large garden (over half an acre!) growing heirloom varieties using organic practices. He can be found surfing in the Outer Banks, kayaking along the many water ways of Tidewater Virginia, or with his hands in the soil.

Barefoot Mama: Holly is a wife, mama, and homesteader. She works full time as a writer in the non-profit sector and cultivates a hygge home and simple lifestyle. In a moment of downtime, you’ll find her with a cup of hot tea and a good book in hand, curled up somewhere near an open window with a dog at her feet.

Barefoot Little: Fiona is an independent, sweet, spunky three-year-old. She loves to be outdoors doing anything we’re doing: gardening, feeding the animals, or just exploring our couple acres. Her favorite activities include: pretending “school”, playing at the park, “helping” Mama, and watching Daniel Tiger.

Barefoot Baby: Ewan is the latest addition to our growing home. Born in the summer of 2019, he has added a whole new layer to our homestead as brother, baby, and boy. He is laid back, happy, and already joining in on the adventure.
