Planning our Adventures

About this time of year we start to get the itch. For the outdoors. For someplace new. For experiences. For different.

We look at our calendar together and plan out the “pretty months” of April through October. Where will we go this year? What won’t break the bank? How much vacation time have we stocked away?

As much as we might wish to hop a flight to New Zealand or explore the coast or Ireland, we don’t have unlimited resources: time or funds. But that doesn’t mean that we’re relegated to a life of boredom never a stone’s throw from home. And thanks to keeping our homestead small, it is possible for us to hire the help we need to care for our land and animals while we’re away for a weekend here and there.

So, here’s the deal. We’ll be driving and camping to each of our destinations this year (sans DC, where we stay with family), stretching those precious dollars as far as they will go!

April: Frisco Campground, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Outer Banks of North Carolina. BF is a surfer and OBX is where is heart calls home.
May: Washington, DC (for high tea with Nana) and Westmoreland State Park, VA
June: Washington, DC (National Zoo, maybe a museum or two, Great Falls NP?)
July: Asheville, NC (where should we camp??)
August: Back to Frisco in OBX!
September: Possibly the Virginia Blue Ridge (Peaks of Otter, Crabtree Falls, and Sherando Lake are all favorites)
October: James River SP

Other potential travels we may throw in there include a trip to Georgia watch my niece compete in a gymnastics meet, a trip to my brother’s Kentucky cabin, a trip to visit a friend in South Carolina. Even without endless time and money, we are going to make this on a year to remember! We have a bunch of day trips planned too that I’ll share soon!

What are your suggestions for travel in the mid-Atlantic region?
